A poetic travel journey
It’s more than just an album: It’s a poetic travel journey with a multi-cultural soundtrack!
Variety is where the magic happens, and it seems that Kristin understood this lesson perfectly, down to naming her project with such a nod at different languages within.
Ultimately, “The Last Train to Durango” also explores the idea of memory and how we leave traces behind when we move on.
People might go their own way, but memories and melodies survive with the passing of time, especially if you capture them in songs. This concept is one of the key markers that hold the album together, reminding listeners that each person we meet becomes part of our story, even if we never see them again.
The music can be dreamy as if caught between waking and sleeping, but it never loses its sense of direction. It keeps moving, like a train pushing onward, even if the destination remains out of sight. Some songs (for example, “Amor en el Desierto”) will make you feel like you just traveled back in time and tune in to a 1950s AM radio station. Others, such as “Wappler,” will make you feel like you just entered a saloon and put a coin in a jukebox!
It’s an eclectic, high-energy and storytelling album
“So those always tall, some kind of attractive men wearing cowboy hats, tough guys with a soft heart, always with a smoking gun in the background, became my childhood fantasy. So these were my early influences.”
„For example Chavela Vargas. She is impressive as a woman, drinking with Jose Alfredo Jimenez in men’s clothes in order to be taken seriously as a (queer) woman, that wasn´t even born in Mexico.” The way she sings “Paloma negra” is simply beautiful. How she plays with her voice and then makes sounds that are so full of pain. I think it’s important to have role models, a thought of “yes, exactly”, even if it’s not what suits you. But there is always something left. In her case: singing with emotion and remaining authentic."
„But also with the fact, that death tears a big hole, but the gratitude of being able to having met such a person is what outweighs it. An impressive Mexican woman once told me that we exchange fantasmas when we meet (during sex, but possibly also when kissing). That also found its way into this song full of ghosts. In the end they all sit next to one: the good, the bad, the ugly, like in an old Western movie. El bueno, el feo, el malo."

Kren kept a rollin', all night long
Kren songs sind zug- lieder (spanisch: „tren", englisch:„Train"), in einer Sprachvermischung, wie sie nur einer reisenden eigentümlich ist: Wenn eine Österreicherin mexikanisch spricht (österreichisch mit mexikanischem Akzent) und dazwischen englisch mit Ösi-akzent - „mexikösi", „Mexaustrianglish",
oder so ähnlich.

In dieser Verwirrung entstehen songs, über schlaflose cowboys, Liebe con locura, die Einsamkeit der pachucos, die Weite der Prärie und eben dieses „dazwischen“, dieses „no soy de Aqui, no soy de allá" einer Chavela Vargas, das sich nur „on the road“ aufspannt. En el camino.

Wenn er dann ertönt, dieser „Whistle blow", ein Geräusch wie ein vorbeifahrender Zug, a Kren passing by, so kann die Zeit gekommen sein, heim zu gehen (der letzte Zug).
vielleicht aber war es auch einfach nur der „Camote mann", der durch die Strassen von Mexico City rollt mit seinen über Holzdampf gerösteten Bananen und Süsskartoffeln, Kristins Mexico City Signature Sound. Dann nämlich wäre es Zeit für eine Nachspeise, baby! postrecito mi amor!
Kren Songs: Melodien, die voM aufstieg und fall der „Queen of the Rodeo" erzählen und ihr, die sie in einem „Streetcar named desire" gekommen ist, um ihr Seelenheil zu finden. Lieder über all diese Gestalten, rancheritas, pachucitas, Gaukler und Hochstapler, Gangster cowboys und bandidos - Carnalitos, die einem so begegnen, da draussen, en el camino.

Was ist das mit dem Kren?

Der "Kren" ist eine typisch österreichische Zutat ("Meerrettich") und verleiht jedem Gericht dadurch erst seinen eigentümlichen Geschmack - genauso wie "das österreichische" auch dem Mystery Kren seine eigentümliche Note gibt

„Kren" ist eine Anlehnung an den spanischen „Tren" und den englischen „train"und nicht zuletzt an eine andere Geschichte vom suchen und nicht finden, dem „Mystery Train", einer Suche nach dem Geist von Elvis by Jim Jarmusch.

Wenn Kristin die alten Hank Williams Songs oder ihre eigenen singt, so tut sie dies immer mit einer Extra Portion Kren: mit am Schmäh oder aber gleich auf Wienerisch. Denn, so behauptet sie, es findet sich auch im alten Wien eine ähnliche Melancholie und Melodie
Und schliesslich, wie sagte Thomas Bernhard immer so schön, hängt doch alles mit allem zusammen.
